Did Queen Marie of Saxony-Altenburg ever imagine her legacy would include a street named in her honor? Here we stand on Marienstraße, a main artery pulsing through Hanover’s Südstadt district. Marienstraße isn’t just any street. Its name echoes the legacy of a queen, taking its name from the Marienkapelle, a chapel that once stood near the Aegidientor gate during the Kingdom of Hanover. The street stretches westward from Aegidientorplatz to Braunschweiger Platz. Imagine traveling this route in the mid-19th century. You would have been following the old road to Misburg and Kirchrode, tracing the path of the former Misburger Damm. Marienstraße held even greater importance before 1954. It was part of Bundesstraße 65, a major highway, until the Südschnellweg was built. As you walk along Marienstraße today, look for the elegant Gartenkirche St. Marien and its peaceful cemetery. Nearby stands the Henriettenstiftung hospital, a poignant reminder of Queen Marie’s generosity. She founded this hospital in 1859 using the inheritance from her aunt, Henriette von Nassau-Weilburg. The hospital serves as a lasting monument to their compassion. For a taste of modern luxury, Marienstraße boasts Hanover’s only Michelin-starred restaurant. The “Jante,” located in a repurposed restroom building at Braunschweiger Platz, earned its first Michelin star in 2017 and a second in 2020. Beneath the bustling intersection of Marienstraße and Sallstraße lies the U-Bahn station Marienstraße. This vital hub connects several lines, including the 4, 5, 6, and 11. It stands ready to whisk you away to other parts of Hanover. Even the U-Bahn station holds a secret. It was built in the 1980s with the potential to become a major interchange for a planned D-line. Although the D-line plans have been shelved, the station retains its intriguing potential. Marienstraße weaves together centuries of history. From royal legacies and bustling thoroughfares to culinary excellence and hidden architectural secrets, this street offers a captivating glimpse into the heart of Hanover.
