Peering up at the Marienbrunnen, have you ever wondered about the stories etched into its very stones? This is no ordinary fountain. The Marienbrunnen is a testament to Salzburg’s resilience and faith.

Let’s delve into the tale of the Marienbrunnen. It stands as a symbol of rebirth after a dramatic event. Imagine the year 1669. A massive rockslide reshaped the city. Where a house once stood, a void remained.

Archbishop Johann Ernst Graf von Thun und Hohenstein saw an opportunity. Two decades after the earth shook, he transformed the space into a public square. He ensured that the destroyed house was not rebuilt. He purchased the “Grainerische Gärtl” and its remains. Thus, the Marienbrunnen found its home.

Look closely at the Marienbrunnen. Notice its six-sided basin. It resembles a simplified market fountain plan. A spiral grating encloses the upper edge. This design echoes the Florianibrunnen in the Old Market.

In 1692, Hans Schwäbel was commissioned to create the marble statue of Mary. See how Mary with the child in her arms gazes protectively towards the mountain? This was intentional. Even years after the rockslide, the mountain loomed as a threat.

The Tuscan column supporting Mary features lion masks. On the east side, a vine symbolizes the Christian Eucharist. Turn to the west side, facing the mountain. There, beneath another lion’s head, you’ll find a pumpkin with leaves.

This pumpkin is no mere decoration. Its hollowed form and numerous seeds symbolize fertility and resurrection. Next to it hangs a walnut. According to Augustinus, the nut represents both humankind and Christ. In folk belief, the walnut also signifies fertility. The coat of arms of the Prince-Archbishop adorns the fountain’s edge.

The Marienbrunnen is more than just a water source. It is a symbol of Salzburg’s history, faith, and artistry. It reminds us of the city’s ability to rebuild and find beauty even after disaster. Take a moment to appreciate the intricate details and the stories they tell. The Marienbrunnen is a true gem of Salzburg’s Old Town, inviting reflection and wonder.
