Whispers of miracles echo around Maria Schutz. This basilica, perched atop the Plainberg, beckons us with its captivating story. Maria Schutz isn’t just a church. It’s a beacon of faith, a testament to resilience, and a masterpiece of Baroque architecture. Maria Schutz stands proudly, overlooking the city of Salzburg and the majestic Alps. Since 1674, it has drawn pilgrims and visitors alike, offering solace and breathtaking views.

The story of Maria Schutz begins amidst the turmoil of the Thirty Years’ War. A fire ravaged the city of Regen in Bavaria, destroying everything in its path. Yet, miraculously, a painting of the Virgin Mary and Child emerged unscathed from the inferno. This divine intervention sparked a surge of devotion, and the image was sent to Salzburg. Prince Archbishop Guidobald Thun, recognizing the significance of the event, commissioned a chapel in 1652 to house the sacred painting.

Just two decades later, Prince Archbishop Max Gandolf von Khuenburg envisioned a grander tribute. He commissioned the Italian architect Giovanni Antonio Dario to construct the magnificent basilica we see today. The construction of Maria Schutz, completed in 1674, marked a new chapter in the story of the miraculous image. The basilica’s double-tower façade, adorned with statues of the four evangelists and the Virgin Mary and Child, welcomes all who enter. The interior, largely preserved in its original Baroque splendor, is a testament to the artistry and devotion of the time. Benedictine abbeys and wealthy Salzburg citizens contributed generously to its opulent decoration.

The heart of Maria Schutz is the high altar, where the miraculous painting resides. The painting by Frans de Neve depicts Mary’s ascension to heaven, framed by statues of Saints Maximilian, Vitalis, Rupert, and Virgil. The annual coronation anniversary, commemorating the crowning of the painting on July 14, 1751, is a major event at Maria Schutz. Even the renowned composer Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart contributed to this tradition. He composed his Coronation Mass for the 28th anniversary of the coronation. Surrounding the altar are paintings depicting the miraculous rescue of the image from the fire and other associated miracles. The two side altars hold relic shrines for Saints Dionysios and Christina.

Maria Schutz offers not just spiritual enrichment, but also breathtaking panoramic views. Leopold Mozart himself, in a letter to his daughter Nannerl, praised the beautiful views from Maria Plain. He encouraged a visit, not necessarily for devotion, but for the sheer beauty of the landscape. So, as you stand before Maria Schutz, remember the miraculous journey of the painting that inspired its creation. Take in the grandeur of the Baroque architecture and the stunning vistas. Let the whispers of miracles and the echoes of history resonate within you.
