Have you ever wondered how peace found its home in the bustling heart of Palermo? Right here, before you, stands Maria Santissima Regina Pacis. This church, dedicated to Mary, Queen of Peace, isn’t just a beautiful building. It’s a testament to the enduring human need for tranquility and spiritual solace. Maria Santissima Regina Pacis emerged from a vision of peace in 1935. Cardinal Luigi Lavitrano spearheaded its creation in the then-new “Quartiere del Littorio.” A small chapel, tucked under the arch of the exedra, initially served the community. But it proved too small for the growing population. Thanks to a generous bequest from the Confraternity of St. Peter Martyr, and other donations, the Cardinal began construction of the church. He dedicated it to Our Lady of Peace, a beacon of hope in a world yearning for harmony. Interestingly, the original plans for the church and rectory are preserved in the Diocesan Historical Archives of Palermo. The adjacent land also became home to the Monastery (Priory) of San Paolino di Nola, of the Order of St. Benedict. The church’s establishment is officially documented in a canonical bull of erection. This document outlines the reasons for creating Maria Santissima Regina Pacis. It highlights the spiritual needs of the neighborhood and the desire to provide a proper place of worship. It also mentions the funding for the project, including an annual income from government bonds. The bull serves as a historical record, capturing the intentions and the administrative steps taken to bring Maria Santissima Regina Pacis to life.
