María Madre de la Esperanza

Twenty-five years ago, a seed of hope was planted in the heart of Argentina. Right here, in Córdoba, the Fundación Misionera “María de la Esperanza” began its work. The María Madre de la Esperanza isn’t just a building. It’s a testament to the unwavering faith and dedication of Sister Theresa Varela. She arrived in Argentina in 1971, sent from her native Cabo Verde by the congregation of San Pedro Claver. In 1997, she found her calling in the Diocese of Cruz del Eje, in San Marcos Sierras, under the guidance of Bishop Omar Colomé. That same year, with a group of dedicated laity, she founded María de la Esperanza. Sister Theresa saw a need and filled it. When she arrived in San Marcos Sierras, she had nothing. The community embraced her, and she, in turn, embraced its most vulnerable members. Her warmth and dedication, particularly towards children, are legendary here. The María Madre de la Esperanza reflects this spirit. The Aldea la Esperanza, a significant structure within the foundation, houses a school for adults. Here, they can complete their primary and secondary education, learn valuable trades, and participate in artistic and athletic workshops. It’s a place of growth, learning, and community, also offering a much-needed comedor, a dining hall providing sustenance and fellowship. The foundation’s impact isn’t limited to San Marcos Sierras. It extends to community centers in several Cruz del Eje neighborhoods. Los Altos, La Curva, La Rinconada, San Antonio, and La Feria all benefit from the foundation’s presence. Even further afield, in the rural areas of El Simbolar and Olivares de San Nicolás, the foundation offers support and resources. This is María Madre de la Esperanza: a beacon of hope, education, and community spirit. It’s a reminder that even in the face of adversity, the human spirit, fueled by faith and dedication, can create extraordinary change. It’s a living testament to the vision of one woman, Sister Theresa Varela, who dared to hope and, in doing so, brought hope to countless others.
