Why does this unassuming church on a hilltop hold such a special place in Augsburg’s heart? Welcome to St Maria von Loreto in Westheim. This isn’t just any church. It’s a pilgrimage site a place of profound historical and spiritual significance.

Its story begins not here but in Italy. A replica of the Holy House of Loreto in Italy was the inspiration for this site. A certain Count Anton Fugger commissioned a carving of the Madonna figure from the Loreto Cathedral. This was in 1582 for his Hainhofen castle chapel. However when Hainhofen was sold in 1601 the chapel was demolished. The Madonna was gifted to Karl Langenmantel. He decided to build a chapel in its exact form on his land the Westheim Kobelberg. Legend says this Holy House was where Mary mother of Jesus lived and where the angel Gabriel announced Jesus’ birth. It supposedly travelled miraculously from Nazareth to Loreto. A Regensburg Domherr Heinrich Welser procured detailed blueprints. The Loreto chapel built to these specifications was consecrated in 1602 by Bishop Heinrich V of Augsburg.

The chapel quickly became a popular pilgrimage destination. It was expanded several times over the centuries to accommodate the growing number of pilgrims. A nave was added around 1657 a tower in 1670. A resident priest was appointed in 1699. The Thirty Years’ War impacted the site. In 1624 a sacristy was added. The Madonna was hidden from Swedish troops in 1632-33.

The Baroque period saw a revival of pilgrimage. The nave was rebuilt again in 1728 becoming longer and taller. The stunning interior artwork dates from this flourishing era. A ‘Schmerzhafte Kapelle’ a confession chapel was added in 1758. Papal indulgences were granted in 1766 and again in 1935.

The church has undergone numerous renovations throughout its history. The West facade and entrance were redesigned in 1902 the tower in 1933. Interior and exterior renovations happened in 1965 and 1973 respectively. A fallen section of the ceiling fresco was restored between 1991 and 193. New interior lighting was installed in 2008.

The interior is a feast for the eyes. Johann Joseph Anton Huber painted the main ceiling fresco depicting the Annunciation. Other frescoes are by Johann Rieger and Johann Wolfgang Baumgartner. Sculptures are by Ehrgott Bernhard Bendl. The church boasts a 1793 ceiling fresco the ‘English Greeting’ framed by cartouches containing emblems of the Immaculate Conception and Mary’s divine motherhood. The high altar is a tabernacle table. There are carved busts of St Joachim and St Anna Mary’s parents. Above the main altar hangs the Madonna and Child a dark-toned wooden statue. Local legend says this image was blackened by a lightning strike. However it probably imitates the Black Madonna of Loreto.

The ‘Schmerzhafte Kapelle’ has frescoes by Johann Wolfgang Baumgartner. They depict angels carrying the Holy House Mary with the Christ Child and pilgrims venerating the Madonna.
