Contemplate the story of Maria-Hilf Church. It stands as a testament to faith and community in Freiburg’s Oberwiehre district. Maria-Hilf’s history began long before its current structure. Between 1885 and 1889 a smaller Maria-Hilf-Kapelle was built. This chapel served as a spiritual anchor for the “Knopfhäusle” the first planned workers’ settlement in Baden.

Picture this: The late 19th century. Freiburg is industrializing. Workers need housing and spiritual guidance. The Maria-Hilf-Kapelle emerges as a beacon of hope. It was initially a branch of the Johanneskirche. The chapel addressed the community’s growing needs.

Fast forward to the early 20th century. The community continued to expand. In 1914 the Pfarrkuratie Maria Hilf was founded recognizing the area’s distinct identity. A larger church was needed to accommodate the expanding congregation.

Between 1927 and 1929 Bernhard Müller-Ruby designed and built the Maria Hilf Kirche. Müller-Ruby was an architect with connections to the Beuron Monastery. He chose a neo-Baroque style. The church reflects the architectural tastes of the time. The Maria Hilf Kirche stands on the former Böhringer estate. This location connects it to the area’s history.

Step inside Maria-Hilf Church. Notice the architecture and design. The neo-Baroque style evokes a sense of grandeur and tradition. Light streams through the windows illuminating the sacred space. Consider the many people who have sought solace and inspiration within these walls.

Maria-Hilf is more than just a building. It is a living part of the community. Today Maria-Hilf is part of a larger pastoral unit. This unit includes St Johann Liebfrauen Günterstal and St Cyriak and Perpetua. Together they form the Seelsorgeeinheit Freiburg-Süd. The church continues to serve the spiritual needs of the faithful.

Remember Maria-Hilf’s dual role. It is both a historical landmark and a vibrant center of worship. Its story reflects Freiburg’s growth its architectural evolution and the enduring power of faith. The Maria-Hilf Church stands as a reminder of Freiburg’s rich history.
