Imagine a sanctuary where whispers of centuries past echo. This is the Margarethenkapelle. This chapel stands as Dortmund-Barop’s oldest preaching site. It is also a testament to time. The Margarethenkapelle is under historical preservation.
Let’s step back to 1348. The Margarethenkapelle was first documented then. A dispute was settled between Fröndenberg Monastery and Priest Johannes v.d. Overhus. He was the Kirchherr of the chapel.
Before 1655 the Margarethenkapelle was a branch of Reinoldikirche. Reinoldikirche is in Dortmund. Later it became an independent Protestant church. This happened under Brandenburg rule.
Picture the scene in 1617. The Margarethenkapelle was newly painted. In 1601 the Barop church bell was cast. Even today the bell is rung by hand.
Consider 1652. Pastor Riese reported on the Hagelfeier. He also mentioned the Margarethenbier.
Imagine a time when renovations revealed secrets. During renovations a reliquary was found in the altar. It now resides in a museum. The museum is on Hansastraße. It only returns to the Margarethenkapelle for special events.
In 1829, the Margarethenkapelle was partially torn down. Only the choir remained.
By 1911, the Margarethenkapelle was too small. There were also fears of a ceiling collapse. This led to the construction of the Lutherkirche.
Between 2001 and 2004, the Margarethenkapelle underwent extensive renovations. It is now a protected building.
Today, the Margarethenkapelle welcomes various groups. Partner parishes use it. The nearby Ostenberg Elementary School visits. Even the Technical University of Dortmund comes here. The Margarethenkapelle is a popular choice for weddings. Even couples from afar choose it. It serves as an alternative to the Barop cemetery’s hall. This is useful when the hall is too small. It has a small kitchenette and a toilet.
