“Marcial, eres el más grande / se ve que eres madrileño…” That’s a snippet from a pasodoble. This song affectionately dedicated to a bullfighter echoes in the heart of Madrid. We are standing before the Marcial Lalanda Plaque. It marks the house where the legendary Marcial Lalanda lived. He breathed his last here in 1990.

This plaque honors Marcial Lalanda. He was not just a bullfighter. He was “El Más Grande” to many. Born in Rivas near Madrid in 1903, Marcial’s destiny was intertwined with bullfighting. His family was deeply rooted in the world of bullfighting. His father served as a mayoral at the Plaza de Toros in Madrid. Also his older brothers, Eduardo and Martín, were novilleros.

Marcial Lalanda’s career began early. He stepped into the ring in 1919. He was already performing in Madrid. His official debut as a matador came in 1922 in Madrid. From then until 1932, Marcial achieved glory. He triumphed in Spain and Latin America. In July 1924, he suffered a serious goring in Madrid. But even that couldn’t stop him.

Marcial was more than brave. He was innovative. He created “La Mariposa”. This is a maneuver quickly embraced by bullfighters. His influence extended beyond the ring. For years, Marcial presided over the Montepío de Toreros. This is a society for bullfighters. He brought significant improvements during his tenure.

He was known for his generosity. He was also known for his commitment. Marcial often fought for the association he led. He would share the ring. Sometimes he fought alone. He did all for the cause.

Marcial Lalanda’s life wasn’t confined to bullfighting. He was also a writer and actor. He appeared in films like “Gloria que mata” in 1922. Later he was in “¡Viva Madrid, que es mi pueblo!” in 1928. He even co-wrote and produced the latter.

The great Marcial Lalanda died in this very house. He was 87 years old. It was October 24, 1990. He left behind a legacy of unforgettable moments. His skill in the ring and dedication to his community made him an icon.

The Marcial Lalanda Plaque is more than a marker. It is a reminder of a man’s passion. It is a reminder of his courage. And it is a reminder of his contribution to Madrid’s cultural identity. Take a moment to appreciate the legacy of “El Más Grande”.
