Doesn’t the name Maoer Mountain sound intriguing? Maoer Mountain is also known as Kitten Mountain. We are standing at the foot of the highest peak in Guangxi. It is also the highest peak in South China. This majestic mountain straddles Ziyuan County and Xing’an County.
Maoer Mountain’s peak soars to 2,142 meters. That is over 7,000 feet. It is about 80 kilometers from Guilin. The name Maoer Mountain comes from its summit. People say it resembles a crouching cat. Can you see it?
The mountains here are part of the Yuecheng Mountains. These mountains date back to the Neoproterozoic Era. That’s 1,000 to 539 million years ago. Maoer Mountain rises 1,861.5 meters above the surrounding area. This makes it a prominent landmark. It is also a National Level Nature Reserve.
Maoer Mountain is a vital source of water. The Li River, Zi River, and Xun River all begin here. Some call it the lifeblood of the Li River system.
These mountains are home to diverse plant and animal life. Ancient old-growth forests thrive here. It’s a perfect place to relax. The summit is often shrouded in mist. Locals believe it is the home of Buddha. Buddha watches over everyone on the mountain.
But the beauty of Maoer Mountain hides a sad story. In 1944, during World War II, a US Army Air Corps B-24 Liberator crashed here. The plane was returning from a bombing raid. All ten crew members were missing for 52 years. In 1996, local youths found the wreckage while searching for herbs.
To reach the top of Maoer Mountain, we will take a shuttle bus. The ride to the parking lot takes about two hours. From there, it’s a 20-minute walk to the highest peak. Many say that the sunrise and sunset from Maoer Mountain are unforgettable. If we are lucky, we might see a sea of clouds.
