Let’s journey back to a time when the idea of a national museum was mocked. Some Manx people thought their history insignificant. They believed nothing of cultural value existed to fill even a small room. Can you imagine such a lack of pride in one’s heritage?
Thankfully, a tenacious group of patriots thought differently. Led by scholar Philip Moore Callow Kermode, they recognized the urgent need to protect the Isle of Man’s heritage. Farmers were using medieval stone cross-slabs to fill hedges. Builders sent Viking treasure hoards to the tip. Manx cultural assets were even sitting in British national museums.
These scholars dedicated themselves to rescuing and explaining the island’s heritage. Their work uncovered astounding artifacts. People started to take notice. In 1886, an Act of Tynwald established the Museum and Ancient Monuments Trustees.
The Trustees had a mission. They would preserve the Isle of Man’s cultural heritage. They would build a national museum. Gathering significant artifacts proved straightforward. But finding a permanent home for the collection was a 30-year struggle.
Philip Kermode led the charge again. On November 2, 1922, the Manx Museum finally opened. It was in the former Noble’s Hospital building. The Henry Bloom Noble Charitable Trustees gifted the building.
Lieutenant Governor Fry remarked at the opening “One hour spent in a museum will be worth many hours spent in a book.” The people of the Isle of Man finally had their treasure house: The Manx Museum, Thie Tashtee Vannin.
The Manx Museum continues to tell the story of the Isle of Man and its people. It reveals stories of the nation’s growth. It provides inspiration for each new generation. The museum holds over one million artifacts in its national collections. Each item connects to the people of the Isle of Man.
