In 1784, a vast land grant was bestowed upon Juan José Dominguez by the King of Spain. This land would eventually become part of the legacy of Manuel Dominguez High School. Fast forward to 1957, and Manuel Dominguez High School opens its doors in Compton, California, a part of the Compton Unified School District. The school proudly bears the name of Don Manuel Dominguez, a prominent California rancher who inherited a significant portion of this original Spanish land grant. His inheritance, a sprawling 75,000 acres, stretched from Redondo Beach to Compton, encompassing areas now known as Gardena, Carson, Torrance, and parts of Long Beach. Manuel Dominguez High School stands as a testament to this rich history. The school’s colors of black, red, and gold symbolize its strength, passion, and excellence. The Dons, as the students are known, compete in the San Gabriel Valley League. Their biggest rival? Lynwood High School, igniting a fierce competition that has spanned decades. The school’s athletic programs have a storied past, particularly in football and basketball. The football team, coached for over thirty years by Willie Donerson and his son Keith, has sent numerous players to the NCAA and NFL. Names like Greg Townsend, Richard Sherman, Jeron Johnson, Bruce Walker, and Chilo Rachal resonate within the halls of Manuel Dominguez High School. The basketball team boasts an equally impressive legacy. NBA stars Cedric Ceballos, Tyson Chandler, Brandon Jennings, Dennis Johnson, and Tayshaun Prince all honed their skills on the Dominguez courts. Beyond the roar of the crowd, the school’s marching band, the Red & Gold Soul Marching Band, brings the rhythm and soul to life. They’ve graced prestigious stages, from the Nickelodeon Kid’s Choice Awards to the Home Depot Battle of the Bands. Even the silver screen has captured the spirit of Manuel Dominguez High School. The 2002 documentary “OT: Our Town” showcases the school’s theatre department, documenting their journey in producing Thornton Wilder’s play, the first theatrical production at Dominguez in over two decades. From its historical roots to its vibrant present, Manuel Dominguez High School continues to shape the lives of its students, leaving an indelible mark on the community and beyond.
