Have you ever felt the weight of a city’s governance? Stand before Mantralaya in Mumbai. This imposing seven-story structure is more than just a building. It’s the beating heart of Maharashtra’s administration. Mantralaya houses most state government departments. It wasn’t always known as Mantralaya. Originally called Sachivalaya meaning ‘House of Secretaries’ the name changed in the eighties. This reflected the growing power of ministers in the state’s democracy. The Chief Minister and Chief Secretary share the sixth floor. A testament to the growing bureaucracy an annex and a 19-story building now stand opposite.

Tragedy has struck Mantralaya twice. In 2012 a fire claimed five lives and destroyed countless files. A short circuit caused both that fire and another in 2013. These incidents highlight the human cost and vulnerability of even the most powerful institutions. Mantralaya is also a place of action. In 2018 a massive road safety walkathon started from its gates. Over five lakh people participated. It showcased the building’s role in public life beyond governance. Mantralaya began construction in 1955. It cost Rs 65.46 lakh. That’s remarkably affordable for such a significant building today. Its design reflected foresight. The spacious rooms and long hallways were planned to accommodate future expansion. However today those hallways are filled with offices and cubicles for staff. Over 7000 employees now work there. Mantralaya is a powerful symbol. It represents the state’s authority and the people it serves. It shows both the strength and fragility of power itself. It remains a significant landmark in Mumbai’s landscape.
