Founded in Birmingham in 1838 Mansfield College has a rich history. Initially called Spring Hill College it was established for Nonconformist students. These were students who did not belong to the Church of England. At the time Oxford and Cambridge universities only allowed Church of England members to get degrees.

The Universities Tests Act of 1871 changed that. Religious tests for non-theological degrees were abolished. This opened up opportunities for Nonconformists. Prime Minister William Ewart Gladstone supported the creation of a Nonconformist college in Oxford.

Spring Hill College moved to Oxford in 1886. It was renamed Mansfield College after George and Elizabeth Mansfield. Basil Champneys designed the Victorian buildings. The college officially opened in October 1889. It was the first Nonconformist college in Oxford.

Mansfield College initially only accepted male students. The first woman Constance Coltman was admitted in 1913. During World War II over forty Government Code & Cypher School staff worked there on British codes and ciphers. In 1979 Mansfield College became co-educational. It finally received full college status in 1995.

Even after its full integration into Oxford University in 1955 some Nonconformist traditions remained. A portrait of Oliver Cromwell hangs in the Senior Common Room. Portraits of 1662 dissenters are in the library and corridors. The chapel remains unconsecrated. It features stained-glass windows and statues of Nonconformist figures like Cromwell. Chapel services still follow Nonconformist traditions.

Today Mansfield College thrives. It’s known for its commitment to access welfare and equality. Over 90% of its students come from state schools. The college is a University College of Sanctuary. It offers a fully funded Sanctuary Scholarship. Mansfield College continues its legacy of inclusivity and academic excellence. It stands as a testament to its unique origins and enduring spirit.
