Have you ever wondered where artists of the past found their inspiration? Let me tell you about the Mannheimer Antikensaal. It is a hidden gem within Mannheim Palace. Its story stretches back to the early 18th century.

The story of the Mannheimer Antikensaal begins not here in Mannheim. Its origins lie in Düsseldorf. That is where the Pfalz-Neuburg family resided. Herzog Johann Wilhelm started acquiring plaster casts from all over Europe. His younger brother Karl Philipp moved the residence to Mannheim. The collection came with him.

Hofarchitekt Peter Anton von Verschaffelt established the Zeichenakademie. The statues were then presented to the public. The collection served to educate young artists. It also attracted intellectuals from all over Europe. Thinkers like Goethe, Schiller, Herder, and Lessing visited.

The collection’s fate was tied to the Kurfürst’s residence. Karl Theodor inherited Bavaria in 1778. He moved to Munich and took the plaster casts with him. Only in the 1970s did Mannheim archaeologists begin to rebuild the collection. Wolfgang Schiering acquired new casts. He aimed to recreate the old collection. Since 1991 it has been presented in the palace.

In 2013 the statues were moved due to construction. They went from the west wing to their current location in the east wing. Students from the Historical Institute of Mannheim University redesigned the exhibition. The project involved twenty master’s students. They were led by Prof. Dr. Hiram Kümpel, Prof. Dr. Christian Mann, and Dr. Astrid Reuter from the Kunsthalle Karlsruhe.

In 2016 the students researched the history of the Mannheimer Antikensaal. They gained knowledge about ancient sculpture. They also learned about museum studies. The statues have shone in new splendor since February 2017.

Imagine this hall filled with artists. They studied each curve and contour. The Mannheimer Antikensaal became a center for artistic education. It fostered a generation of talent. The academy produced many famous artists.

The Mannheimer Antikensaal is open to the public. You can visit from Monday to Saturday. It is free and no appointment is needed. Enter through the main entrance of the University. Take the stairs or the elevator to the second floor. There you will find these amazing sculptures.

The Mannheimer Antikensaal played a vital role in Mannheim’s cultural history. It offered access to classical art. It inspired generations of artists and intellectuals. Today it stands as a testament to Mannheim’s rich heritage. It reminds us of the power of art and education. It is a legacy worth preserving.

Take a moment to appreciate these casts. They are copies of masterpieces. They tell a story of artistic passion. They span centuries. The Mannheimer Antikensaal is more than just a collection of statues. It is a journey through time. It is an exploration of human creativity.
