They bob gently on the Elbe. Four men on buoys. This is the Mann auf der Boje sculpture. Created by Stephan Balkenhol in 1993 these aren’t your average nautical markers.

Originally carved from oak these figures stand 240 meters tall. They are quite heavy each weighing nine tons. Imagine the effort involved in creating them. Then placing them on buoys in the water.

The four men each wear a simple white shirt and dark trousers. Their faces are expressionless. Neutral. This was intentional by the artist. Balkenhol wanted viewers to create their own stories. To imagine the lives of these enigmatic figures.

But the elements took their toll. Wind and water damaged the oak. In 2020 they were replaced. New aluminum figures were made. They are now weather resistant. The men remain a permanent part of Hamburg’s waterscape.

These aren’t just statues. They’re a conversation starter. A unique piece of public art. They bob and sway with the current. A silent commentary on the ever-changing flow of the Elbe. A reminder that even in stillness there is movement. A constant dance between man and nature.

The figures are a significant work by Stephan Balkenhol. He’s one of Germany’s most important sculptors. He favors wood. He creates figures that are life-sized. The texture of the wood is always visible. This adds to the sculptures’ raw. Almost sketched-like quality. It gives them a peculiar life.

So here we are standing before the Mann auf der Boje. Take a moment. Look at the men. What stories do you see in their still faces? What adventures have they witnessed? What tales do they hold silently within? Only you can answer. Each of us interprets these figures uniquely. The sculptures remain open to interpretation. That’s their enduring power. That’s their magic.
