Built in 1960 the Manhattan Civil Courthouse was designed by William Lescaze and M. W. Del Gaudio. Lescaze a modern architect teamed up with Del Gaudio. They were also part of the team that designed the Williamsburg Houses in Brooklyn. The Manhattan Civil Courthouse is known for its modern style. It has a limestone facade and stainless steel windows. The building faces an open plaza.

Interestingly the Manhattan Civil Courthouse was actually the city’s first courthouse to be recognized for its accessibility. It was honored for being barrier-free for people with disabilities.

There’s a story about the Tweed Courthouse too. The Tweed Courthouse functions were moved to the Manhattan Civil Courthouse. There were even plans to demolish the Tweed Courthouse. Fortunately those plans never happened.

LiRo-Hill served as Construction Manager for a major reconstruction project. This reconstruction took place without disturbing the occupants of the Manhattan Civil Courthouse. The project included electrical mechanical HVAC plumbing and fire protection upgrades. They also improved fire alarm and life safety systems and security systems. ADA compliance for building entrances and bathrooms was implemented. The facade and parapet walls were repaired. Structural and waterproofing work was completed. The project was finished in just 12 months while the courthouse remained open. Safety protocols were put in place to protect the public and staff during construction. LiRo-Hill coordinated the construction to meet a tight schedule.
