Established in 1824 the Manchester Metropolitan University boasts a rich history. It began as the Manchester Mechanics’ Institute. This institution aimed to educate artisans in science. It was a private initiative. Funding came entirely from private sources. The goal was to enhance Manchester’s growing industries.
The Manchester School of Design joined the fold in 1838. This was a response to British industries losing market share to foreign competitors. The school aimed to boost local artisans’ design skills. This would reduce the reliance on overseas firms.
Over time more schools were added. These included schools of commerce education and domestic science. Colleges in Didsbury Crewe and Alsager also became part of the network. The Manchester College of Science and Technology later transferred its non-degree programs. This happened in 1966. The school was absorbed into the School of Art.
In 1970 the institution became Manchester Polytechnic. Mergers continued through the years. Didsbury College and Hollings College joined in 1977. The City of Manchester College of Higher Education followed in 1983. In 1992 a significant event occurred. Manchester Polytechnic gained university status. It officially became Manchester Metropolitan University.
The university’s growth didn’t stop there. In 2004 the Manchester School of Physiotherapy joined. This institution was formed in 1991. It combined the schools of physiotherapy from Manchester Royal Infirmary and Withington Hospital.
