Wow. Look at this magnificent building. This is Manchester Central Convention Complex.

For over 140 years this iconic landmark has stood tall. It began life in 1880 as a bustling train station. Central Station it was called. It became one of the North West’s major hubs. It handled countless travellers until 1969. Increased car use and rail network changes led to its closure.

Amazingly it escaped demolition. Listed building status saved it from the wrecking ball. For over twenty years it stood derelict and largely unused. A sad sight. Then in 1978 the Greater Manchester County Council purchased the building. They had big plans. A huge urban regeneration project started in 1982.

The transformation was remarkable. In 1986 Her Majesty the Queen opened the Greater Manchester Exhibition and Event Centre. Or G-MEX as many Mancunians fondly remember it. The first exhibition was Enterprise North West. It hosted many famous concerts. The Smiths Oasis and Take That all graced its stage.

In 2001 The Exchange Building was added. This extended the venue considerably. It created a unique convention facility in the heart of Manchester. In 2007 G-MEX and MICC were rebranded. Manchester Central Convention Complex was born. This name referenced its history. It also highlighted its location and its importance to the city.

A £30 million overhaul followed in 2009. This elevated the venue to a world-class standard. Today it hosts everything from political conferences to gala dinners. It’s even been used as a television set. Cold Feet and Ninja Warrior are just a few examples.

In March 2020 Manchester Central became something quite extraordinary. It transformed into the NHS Nightingale North West hospital. For over a year it played a crucial role supporting the NHS during the pandemic. That’s an impressive part of its history.

Today Manchester Central is back to what it does best. Hosting incredible events. It is a testament to the city’s resilience and its commitment to revitalising its heritage. So soak in the atmosphere. Marvel at the vaulted arches. Imagine the history within these walls.
