The church’s design is breathtaking. Its cruciform plan includes a lower level with a chapel dedicated to the Protection of the Holy Virgin. The main church boasts impressive dimensions 31.5 meters long and 8.65 meters wide. The main dome rises a striking 31.5 meters. It’s a testament to the skill of its builders. Elements from demolished Bucharest churches were reused. They are reminders of the city’s rich history. The intricate stone carvings and copper roof add to its beauty. This showcases Brancusian-style architecture. This is a fitting homage to Romania’s rich architectural heritage.
But the story goes deeper than just architecture. The monastery houses the workshops of the Biblical Institute for Orthodox Mission. There’s also a candle factory called “The Candle of the Romanian Saints”. This contributes to the monastery’s self-sufficiency. A part of the monastery’s farm supplies food banks. These help those in need within the Bucharest Archdiocese.
The consecration ceremony was a grand affair. It was held on October 29 2006. Patriarch Teoctist himself presided. He was accompanied by a large gathering of archbishops priests and deacons. The church was enriched with relics of Saint Andrew Saint George and Saints Dionysius and Ambrose. These saints represent the deep roots of Romanian Orthodoxy.
The monastery also holds a second patron saint. It’s Saint Theodoctius of Palestine. His feast day is celebrated each year on September 3rd. This honors Patriarch Teoctist who was a great builder and leader.
