How often does a place witness the birth of a nation? Ba Dinh Square in Hanoi is such a place. It stands as Vietnam’s most significant square. It is deeply woven into the nation’s identity.
Ba Dinh Square is more than just a space. It is a historical and cultural complex. Grand parades happen here on major Vietnamese holidays. The square attracts tourists. Locals also use it as a recreational spot.
Think back to September 2 1945. President Ho Chi Minh stood here. He read the Declaration of Independence. The Democratic Republic of Vietnam was born. This ended feudalism imperialism and colonialism. Imagine the atmosphere that day. Hope excitement and a new national identity filled the air.
Before this pivotal moment the area was wilderness. The French built a flower garden. It was called Rond Point Puginier or Round Square. Administrative buildings and villas surrounded this garden. Later Mayor Tran Van Lai renamed it Ba Dinh Square. He honored General Dinh Cong Trang. This general fought against the French. He was at the Ba Dinh base in Thanh Hoa.

Ba Dinh Square has witnessed many significant events. On January 1 1955 Hanoi residents rallied. They celebrated the return of the Central Vietnamese Workers’ Party. A grand military parade took place on September 2 1975. It celebrated the country’s reunification. Large-scale rallies parades and processions occurred on October 10 2010. They marked the 1000th anniversary of Thang Long Hanoi.
The flag-raising ceremony happens daily. It is at 6 am in summer. It is at 6:30 am in winter. The flag lowering is at 9 pm. The Honor Guard performs this ceremony. It takes place in front of Ho Chi Minh Mausoleum.
In times of national mourning Ba Dinh Square flies the flag at half-mast. This lasts for two days. It starts from 12 noon.
