“Mini-West Kowloon” is what they wanted to create here. Man Lap Fong is more than just a shopping mall. It’s an attempt to blend art, culture, and commerce.

Hello everyone. Welcome to Man Lap Fong on Ersha Island. This spot is known as the Cultural Gold Coast of Guangzhou.

Man Lap Fong was completed in 2018. Fei Architects designed this interesting space. The goal was to create a self-sustaining model. Revenue from the shops and other operations would fund art and cultural activities. This would ensure its survival.

The design features covered walkways around a central courtyard. This courtyard hosts exhibitions, shops, restaurants, offices, and performance spaces. It’s a public urban space. It brings together the surrounding buildings into a coherent whole.

Notice the veranda on the southwest side of Man Lap Fong. It rises gradually. This serves two purposes. It provides shade. Also it acts as a sightseeing platform. From here, you get panoramic city views.

The architects wanted to discourage mindless consumerism here. So they hid the shops within the atrium corridors. Community activities bring them to life. Man Lap Fong became a popular spot soon after opening.

Ersha Island itself has an interesting history. In the 1980s, development here was aimed at foreign buyers. Ordinary locals were even denied access. This showed how exclusive the location was. Later, the government invested in cultural venues here. This included the Guangdong Museum of Art and Xinghai Concert Hall. Now, the island is synonymous with high art.

One unique aspect of Man Lap Fong is its livehouse. InterCulture operates this space. They also run an art space in a 400-year-old house in Huangpu Ancient Village. Both spaces are near Guangzhou’s city center.

The architects also thought about sustainability. A courtyard design promotes effective ventilation. Shading also helps save energy. The veranda is key to this.

Professor Sun Yimin once spoke about Qilou. Qilou are Guangzhou’s arcade houses. He said their form can be modern. The most important thing is life. These buildings accommodate the life of the city. Man Lap Fong adds another kilometer of covered walkways to Ersha Island’s Cultural Golden Coast. These walkways offer shelter from wind and rain. They are used for traffic, social, cultural, and commercial activities.

Man Lap Fong aims to be classless in its design. The materials and colors are similar to nearby buildings. This helps it blend in.

Take a moment to appreciate this unique space. It’s more than just a mall. Man Lap Fong is a cultural hub. It supports the arts and brings the community together.
