The footbridge served Augsburg faithfully for many years. This was until the demands of modern transportation brought about a change. By the 1960s Augsburg needed a more efficient way to connect the city center with the burgeoning industrial areas to the north. The construction of the Nordtangente a major highway bypass was underway. A new bridge was needed. This bridge had to be able to handle the increasing traffic. The decision was made to replace the old footbridge. The MAN-Brücke a modern concrete structure was erected in its place. It was inaugurated on August 7th 1968. Named after the nearby MAN factory the bridge quickly became a vital artery of Augsburg’s transportation network. The MAN-Brücke stands as a testament to Augsburg’s growth and evolution.
