Why did they ever replace that simple footbridge? We are standing here at the MAN-Brücke a vital part of Augsburg’s modern infrastructure. But it wasn’t always a bridge for cars. The MAN-Brücke has a history stretching back over 130 years. Before its current incarnation it existed as a humble footbridge. Imagine strolling along the Lech river in 1890. You come across a simple footbridge. This bridge allowed pedestrians and cyclists to cross the river. It offered picturesque views of the city. The footbridge served Augsburg faithfully for many years. This was until the demands of modern transportation brought about a change. By the 1960s Augsburg needed a more efficient way to connect the city center with the burgeoning industrial areas to the north. The construction of the Nordtangente a major highway bypass was underway. A new bridge was needed. This bridge had to be able to handle the increasing traffic. The decision was made to replace the old footbridge. The MAN-Brücke a modern concrete structure was erected in its place. It was inaugurated on August 7th 1968. Named after the nearby MAN factory the bridge quickly became a vital artery of Augsburg’s transportation network. The MAN-Brücke stands as a testament to Augsburg’s growth and evolution. It transformed from a quaint footbridge to a bustling traffic artery. It reflects the city’s ability to adapt to changing times while still remembering its past.
