Can you picture an elegant building, blending Art Nouveau with Moorish Revival styles? It’s a captivating sight, and we stand before it, at the Malmö Synagogue. The synagogue stands on Föreningsgatan in the city of Malmö – a symbol of the city’s rich Jewish heritage. Built in 1903, it stands as Malmö’s first non-Christian place of worship, and it’s one of the few Moorish-style synagogues that survived Kristallnacht in 1938. It’s a testament to the resilience of the Jewish community in Malmö – a community that began in 1871, with immigrants from Germany and Poland. Over the years, it attracted Jews fleeing poverty and persecution from all over Eastern Europe. In its prime, the community boasted over 2,000 members, a significant proportion of Malmö’s population. But sadly, in recent decades, antisemitic sentiment has led to a decline in membership. Despite this, the Malmö Synagogue continues to thrive, hosting events and serving as a knowledge center in collaboration with Malmö Municipality. It continues to attract approximately 5,000 visitors annually. However, the story of the synagogue is not without its challenges. In 2010 and 2012, the synagogue was targeted by attacks using explosives. As we stand here today, we see a building that has endured hardship. Yet, it rises majestically, reminding us of the enduring spirit of the community and the importance of fighting against intolerance and hate. This synagogue is a beacon of hope, a symbol of faith, and a reminder of the rich tapestry of cultures that makes Malmö such a unique city.
