Whose garden do you think we’re standing in? It’s the garden of a palace, or at least it used to be. Welcome to Maligawatta, a name derived from the Sinhala words for “garden” and “palace.” Maligawatta’s history stretches back to the 16th century. This seemingly ordinary suburb played a pivotal role in a dramatic nine-month siege in 1587. King Rajasinha I of Sitawaka, after conquering the Kandyan Kingdom, set his sights on Colombo. He amassed a formidable force: 60,000 men, 150 guns, thousands of muskets and firelocks, and 120 war elephants. He chose this very area, then fields adjacent to what became known as Maligakanda or Palace Hill, for his headquarters. Imagine the scene: a vast army camped right here in Maligawatta, preparing to storm the Portuguese fort of Colombo. The Portuguese, outnumbered and outgunned, held their ground for an incredible nine months within the walls of their fort. They faced Rajasinha’s army right here in what is now bustling Maligawatta. Now, fast forward to the present. Maligawatta is perhaps best known today as the home of the R. Premadasa International Cricket Stadium. But beneath the roar of the crowds and excitement of the matches, the echoes of that historic siege still linger. The story of Maligawatta is a blend of royal ambition, military strategy, and resilience. It’s a reminder that even seemingly ordinary places can hold extraordinary stories. From a king’s war camp to a sporting arena, Maligawatta has witnessed centuries of Sri Lankan history unfold.
