Tucked away in the village of Ballasalla, Malew AFC has witnessed the ebb and flow of nearly a century of Isle of Man football. Malew AFC, affectionately known as the “Ballasalla Boys,” was founded in 1922. A small group of passionate individuals, including R.H. Kermode and Arthur Craine, brought the club to life. Imagine the excitement as they laid the groundwork for what would become a beloved local institution. Malew AFC joined the Second League. Their early years were marked by an underdog spirit. In just six years, they clinched the Southern Section title of the Second League. They went on to defeat Michael United 4-0 in a decisive match. They continued their ascent. In 1935, they claimed their second Second League title. They secured their place in Manx football history just before relegation and promotion were introduced. The club tasted victory again in 1938, winning their third Second League title. Malew AFC also made its first appearance in the Junior Cup Final in 1937. Although they were defeated by Rushen United, it marked a significant moment in their history. Fast forward to 1974. Malew AFC achieved a resounding victory in the Hospital Cup final. They triumphed over the favored Peel team with a score of 5-2. The Lowey brothers, Gordy and Alfie, led the charge, Gordy scoring a hat-trick and Alfie netting the other two goals. More recently, in the 2014-2015 season, Malew AFC striker Andy Glover made his mark. He won the Isle of Man FA Silver Boot, scoring an impressive 42 goals in just 18 games. His accomplishment earned him the title of Isle of Man Division 2 Player of the Year. Even in recent years, Malew AFC continues to be a vital part of the Isle of Man football scene. They celebrated their centenary in 2022 with a dramatic victory in the Woods Cup. This victory, secured by a penalty shootout against St Johns, was a testament to their enduring spirit. From its humble beginnings to its present-day triumphs, Malew AFC remains a source of pride for the community.
