During the Spanish conquest, Maldonado held a pivotal role. It was the second most important city on the eastern bank of the Uruguay River. You might be surprised to know that Maldonado wasn’t always in this exact location. In 1757, it was moved from its original location. José Joaquín de Viana, the governor of Montevideo at the time, orchestrated the relocation of a Guaraní native settlement. This act established the foundation of what we now recognize as the historical heart of Maldonado. The Spanish monarchs took a keen interest in Maldonado’s growth. Their influence is evident in the architecture surrounding the main square, particularly the cathedral and the cuartel de dragones, which echo traditional Spanish design. The city’s historical significance attracted even renowned naturalist Charles Darwin. In 1833, Darwin chose Maldonado as his base for studying the region’s diverse wildlife. However, the Guerra Grande, or Big War, plunged Maldonado into a period of hardship and neglect. Occupied by both warring factions, the city was left reeling. It faced years of stagnation following the Revolución de Lanzas (Spears Revolution). Today, Maldonado has thankfully rebounded, reclaiming its position as a vibrant city. The echoes of its tumultuous past still resonate, whispering through its cobbled streets and colonial buildings. It serves as a reminder of Uruguay’s complex history.
