“Home of the Bulldogs” is more than just a motto. It is the proud spirit of Malcolm X Shabazz High School. Founded in 1912 as South Side High School, this institution has undergone remarkable transformations. In 1972, it was renamed to honor the legacy of Malcolm X. This change reflects the school’s commitment to its community.
Malcolm X Shabazz High School stands as a beacon of education in Newark. It is located in Essex County New Jersey. As we stand here, we see more than just a school building. We see a place with a rich history. The school was built in 1912. It originally housed South Side High School and Newark Junior College.
The school is accredited by the Middle States Association of Colleges and Schools. It will remain accredited until July 2031. As of 2023–24 school year, Malcolm X Shabazz High School has 354 students. The school has 25 classroom teachers. This means that there is a student to teacher ratio is 14.2:1.
The Malcolm X Shabazz High School Bulldogs compete in the Super Essex Conference. This includes both public and private schools in Essex County. The Bulldogs also participate in the North Jersey Super Football Conference.
Malcolm X Shabazz High School boasts impressive athletic achievements. The boys basketball team has secured multiple Group III state championships. They won in 1979, 1995, 1997, 2001 and 2005. As South Side High School, they won in 1962, 1965, 1969 and 1971. The girls basketball team has also dominated. They won 11 state championships. This is the most of any public school in the state.
The football team has also achieved greatness. They won the North II Group I state sectional championship in 2014, 2017 and 2023. These victories highlight the athletic prowess.
Several notable individuals have walked these halls. Ed Koch former Mayor of New York City, graduated from here. He graduated in 1941 when it was South Side High School. Gloria Gaynor singer of “I Will Survive”, graduated in 1961. Cissy Houston Grammy Award winning singer also graduated from South Side High School. Bernard Marcus co founder of Home Depot, graduated in 1947.
Malcolm X Shabazz High School faced challenges. The school struggled with violence and instability. Enrollment declined. Graduation rates fell. However, dedicated individuals stepped up. Divine Bradley of The Future Project, collaborated with Principal Gemar Mills. Together, they implemented innovative methods. These methods aimed to empower students and improve the school’s climate.
Today, Atiba Buckman serves as the school’s principal. She continues the mission. She strives to create a positive and supportive learning environment. The colors black and gold symbolize the school’s spirit.
Malcolm X Shabazz High School is more than just bricks and mortar. It is a place of learning, growth and community pride. It is a place where students are encouraged to achieve their full potential. As the alma mater of successful people from all walks of life. It has proven to be an important place for the local community.
