“Behold the Malaysian Houses of Parliament” I announced. The imposing structure rises before you a testament to Malaysia’s history.

This isn’t just any building. It’s the heart of Malaysian democracy. The Malaysian Houses of Parliament house the Dewan Rakyat the House of Representatives and the Dewan Negara the Senate. Here laws are debated decisions are made and the future of the nation is shaped.

Construction of the Malaysian Houses of Parliament began in 1962. It was completed just a year later in 1963. The design is modernist reflecting the nation’s aspirations for progress and modernity. The architect Sir William Ivor Shipley a British architect working for the Malaysian Public Works Department deserves credit for this landmark.

The complex is actually two parts a three-story main building and a striking 17-story tower. The main building houses the main chambers. The tower provides office space for representatives.

Did you know that even though most government operations moved to Putrajaya in the late 1990s the parliament still meets here in Kuala Lumpur? This building continues to be the centre of political life.

The Malaysian Houses of Parliament holds a special place in the nation’s history. It was inaugurated on 21 November 1963 by the third Yang di-Pertuan Agong. This event marked a significant moment in Malaysia’s journey. The building’s cost was a substantial RM18 million a significant investment in the nation’s future.

Interestingly the Malaysian Houses of Parliament has appeared on Malaysian currency. It’s featured on the reverse of the first series sen coins and on the first and second series of M$1000 banknotes. A symbol of national pride it’s been a part of Malaysia’s visual identity.

A statue of Tunku Abdul Rahman Malaysia’s first Prime Minister stands proudly near the Parliament Square. He championed the construction of this building. His vision for a modern and independent Malaysia is embodied in this majestic structure.

So here we stand before this significant landmark. A symbol of democracy a testament to Malaysian history and a vital part of the nation’s identity. The Malaysian Houses of Parliament is more than just a building it’s a reflection of Malaysia’s journey.
