“Anyone fancy a game?” someone shouts. Here we are at the Malaysia National Hockey Stadium. This multi-use stadium is in the National Sports Complex, Bukit Jalil, Kuala Lumpur. It is a place where sporting history has been made. It continues to be made.

The Malaysia National Hockey Stadium is primarily used by the Malaysia national field hockey team and the Malaysia women’s national field hockey team. Known locally as Stadium Hoki Nasional Malaysia or simply “The National Stadium,” it’s more than just a sports venue. It is a symbol of Malaysia’s dedication to field hockey.

Built in 1997, this stadium opened its doors in 1998. Since then, it has hosted numerous international events. These include the 1998 Commonwealth Games and the 2002 Men’s Hockey World Cup. The stadium has a main arena which can hold up to 12,000 spectators. It also features a second pitch with a capacity of 2,000. This second pitch is mainly used for practice matches.

In 2017, the Malaysia National Hockey Stadium achieved a significant milestone. It became the first FIH Global Elite Pitch in history. This award recognized the quality of both the main field and its training grounds. In 2019, the stadium took another innovative step by installing a polyethylene artificial pitch. Malaysia became the first nation to use this technology.

Beyond sports, the Malaysia National Hockey Stadium also serves as a venue for entertainment events. The stadium is being optimized as a medium concert venue.

The Malaysia National Hockey Stadium complex includes dedicated prayer rooms. These specialized facilities reflect Malaysian sporting traditions and religious practices. There are also conference rooms, medical facilities, and changing areas. A press center accommodates 100 journalists during international events.

But did you know that the Malaysia National Hockey Stadium has also appeared in a music video? The song “Simetri” by Amy Search and Hazama AF9 used the stadium as a filming location.

So, as you stand here at the Malaysia National Hockey Stadium, take a moment to appreciate its history. Think about its contributions to sports and entertainment in Malaysia. This stadium is more than just a building. It is a place where memories are made.
