A vibrant red once painted Mala’e Kula. It wasn’t always the solemn royal burial ground we see today. Mala’e Kula or Red Square is more than just a cemetery. It’s the final resting place for Tongan kings and their closest family. It sits a short distance south of the royal palace along the Hala Tu’i the King’s Road. This road is also called the Hala Paini or Pine Road. European settlers planted Norfolk pines along it. Sadly they are gone now their deep roots succumbing to the seawater.

The name Mala’e means village green park or playground in Tongan. But it also means royal cemetery. Kula means red. This refers to a remarkable event the 1885 katoanga kula or red festival. This was a fundraiser for Tonga College. Everyone wore red that day. The college’s colour is vermilion red a fitting tribute to the event that gave this place its name.

King Siaosi Taufa’ahau Tupou I the first king of modern Tonga is buried here. His tomb is centrally located. You can see it clearly from the palace grounds along the Hala Tu’i. His burial marked the beginning of Mala’e Kula as the royal burial ground. Other royals followed. Queen Lavinia Princess ‘Onelua and many more. The list of those laid to rest here continues to grow. Even King Siaosi Tupou V rests here. Each burial adds to Mala’e Kula’s rich history and poignant story.

Imagine the processions that once snaked down Hala Tu’i. The vibrant colours the somber respect. The weight of tradition the sorrow of loss. Now the air is still. Only the occasional bird call breaks the quiet. But the history is palpable. It resonates in the very earth.

The crimson hues of the 1885 festival may be gone. The pines along the King’s Road may be a distant memory. Yet the significance of Mala’e Kula remains. It stands as a powerful testament to Tonga’s rich royal legacy. It’s a place of quiet reflection a place to honor the past a place to remember those who shaped a nation. The red square a silent story in the heart of Nuku’alofa.
