This sets it apart from other international schools, which were traditionally seen as “specialty institutions.” This special recognition, secured upon its opening in April 2009, means Makuhari International School enjoys government support and is integrated into the Japanese education system. This allows for smoother transitions for students who may later choose to enter Japanese junior high schools or other international institutions. The school first opened its doors in 2009 with 170 students. It was the culmination of years of planning. It was driven by the vision of Chiba Prefecture and Chiba City to establish an international school in the Makuhari area. They hoped to attract foreign businesses. The initiative dates back to the 1990s, reflecting a long-term commitment to global education. Makuhari International School occupies a 15,000 m2 site in Makuhari New City’s Academic Zone. The primarily wooden, single-story complex boasts a unique architectural design. The buildings, designed by Coelacanth and Associates, even won an award from the Architectural Institute of Japan in 2011. They offer a spacious and light-filled learning environment for approximately 300 students from kindergarten to grade 6. Makuhari International School’s curriculum strikes a unique balance. While primarily adhering to the Japanese curriculum, all classes are taught entirely in English. The exceptions are, naturally, Japanese language and culture subjects. The school also integrates additional content and learning objectives from other curricula, especially the UK’s, adding to the richness and diversity of the educational experience.
