In 1976, Sultan Hassanal Bolkiah awarded scholarships. These scholarships allowed 26 Malay-medium students to study in the United Kingdom. This showed a strong commitment to supporting further education. In 1979, the college moved to its permanent campus in Gadong. The new campus cost B$26,000,000.

On April 17, 1986, the center officially became Maktab Duli Pengiran Muda Al-Muhtadee Billah. In 2015, the college had 1100 students. In 2022, the Student Learning Center was renamed the Student Learning Service Center.
