The Makishima clan, deeply rooted in this region, built their stronghold here. In 1573, the castle became a sanctuary for Shogun Ashikaga Yoshiaki. Seeking refuge from the encroaching forces of the ambitious Oda Nobunaga, Yoshiaki sought the protection of the Makishima clan. This decision would prove fatal. Nobunaga, a force of nature in his own right, laid siege to Makishima Castle. The ensuing battle witnessed the desperation of Yoshiaki and the unwavering ambition of Nobunaga, culminating in Yoshiaki’s surrender. This event marked the beginning of the end for the Ashikaga Shogunate, forever altering the course of Japanese history.
