Born in Germany as Feist Emanual Heim, Major Leon Dyer led a life full of adventure. The Major Leon Dyer Plaque here in Houston commemorates his remarkable journey. Dyer immigrated to the U.S. with his family around 1812. They settled in Baltimore, where they established a meatpacking business. Dyer eventually became a U.S. citizen and even participated in the Second Seminole War in Florida. However, his life took a dramatic turn when he joined the Texas War of Independence. He arrived in Galveston in April 1836 and quickly proved himself a valuable asset. He even provided General Houston with essential supplies after the Battle of San Jacinto. On May 18, 1836, Dyer’s bravery and leadership earned him a promotion to Major by President David G. Burnet. He continued to serve in the Texas forces, helping to secure the newly-won independence of the Republic. The Major Leon Dyer Plaque stands as a testament to his commitment and sacrifice in the fight for Texas.
