Slipping through time, let’s journey back to a bustling Kolkata afternoon on September 4, 2018. A sudden, earth-shattering roar split the air near the Majherhat Bridge. The unthinkable happened. A major section of the Majherhat Bridge, a vital artery connecting Kolkata’s southern suburbs to the heart of the city, crumbled. The Majherhat Bridge, a familiar landmark for commuters and residents alike, became a scene of chaos and despair. Three lives were tragically lost in the collapse. Prabir Kumar Dey, a worker on the nearby Purple Line metro project. Soumen Bag, a resident of Behala. And Gautam Mondal, a cook also employed by the Purple Line project. Twenty-five others were injured, their lives forever marked by the disaster. The Majherhat Bridge disaster wasn’t just a structural failure. It exposed deeper concerns about the city’s aging infrastructure. This was Kolkata’s third bridge collapse in just six years. The Majherhat Bridge itself had been flagged as unsafe in a 2016 audit. Concerns about visible cracks had been raised by police, commuters, and residents, but tragically, these warnings went unheeded. The Majherhat Bridge, originally built in the 1960s, held a significant history. Designed by the renowned engineer Khounish Roy, who also contributed to the iconic Coronation Bridge, it was considered an engineering marvel of its time. Roy’s innovative use of pre-stressed concrete and progressively reducing girder heights was groundbreaking. This design allowed the bridge to navigate the complex intersection of Diamond Harbour Road and Burdwan Road while providing clearance for trains below. The Majherhat railway station and the adjacent metro station underscore the bridge’s crucial role in the city’s transportation network. It was part of National Highway 12 and spanned the Sealdah South local rail network and the Kolkata Circular Railway lines. In the aftermath of the collapse, train services were disrupted, and road traffic was thrown into chaos. The Chief Minister, Mamata Banerjee, ordered an investigation and acknowledged the precarious state of other bridges in the city. The incident fueled public distrust in the safety of bridges across India. Later investigations pointed to a combination of factors. Pollution, inadequate maintenance, and hasty patchwork repairs were all implicated. The Majherhat Bridge collapse serves as a sobering reminder of the importance of prioritizing infrastructure maintenance and heeding warnings about structural safety. While the new Jai Hind Bridge, opened in 2020, stands as a symbol of resilience and progress, the memory of the 2018 tragedy serves as a stark cautionary tale.
