On a crisp Detroit evening in 1915, the Majestic Theatre’s doors swung open for the first time. Imagine a world without movies as we know them. This grand theatre, designed by C. Howard Crane, was originally built to showcase plays and vaudeville acts. The Majestic Theatre, located on Woodward Avenue, quickly became a cultural hub. The Majestic was a marvel, boasting a seating capacity of 1,651, making it one of the largest theatres in the world at that time. Fast forward to the 1920s. The silver screen took the world by storm. The Majestic Theatre, adapting to the changing times, transitioned into a movie palace. The roar of the twenties and the magic of the movies filled the Majestic’s ornate interiors. Sadly, the original Italian-style facade didn’t last. In 1934, Woodward Avenue underwent a major expansion. The Majestic Theatre lost the front 35 feet of its structure. But from this change emerged the iconic look we see today. The architectural firm of Bennett & Straight redesigned the facade in a striking Art Deco style. The Majestic Theatre now proudly displays the largest enameled metal panel Art Deco facade in the Detroit metropolitan area. The theatre’s story wasn’t always glamorous. After its heyday, it faced periods of closure, serving as a church and even a photographic studio. It sat vacant for a decade, a sleeping giant waiting to be reawakened. In 1984, a new chapter began. The Majestic Theatre was revived. Today, the Majestic Theatre thrives as a vibrant music venue, hosting a diverse range of artists and genres. It is part of the larger Majestic Theatre Center. This complex includes the Garden Bowl bowling alley, the Majestic Cafe, and the Magic Stick. So, the next time you pass the Majestic Theatre, remember its journey. It’s a story of adaptation, resilience, and the enduring power of entertainment.
