“A symbol of survival” a whispered voice calls out. Before you stands the Maja statue. This bronze figure is more than just art. It’s a testament to resilience. It’s a story of a brave artist Gerhard Marcks. He was a teacher at the Bauhaus school. The Nazis deemed him a “degenerate artist”. This was due to his anti-fascist views and support for Jewish students. They forced him to surrender his sculptures. These were melted down for the war effort. Undeterred Marcks created Maja in 1942. His studio was bombed the following year. Miraculously Maja survived. She became a symbol of defiance against the Third Reich. Her modernist style and sensual form were an affront to Nazi ideals. In 1949 Maja traveled to Philadelphia. She was part of a sculpture exhibition. She stood proudly on the steps of the Philadelphia Museum of Art for decades. In 1952 Maja embarked on a journey. This was part of the “Sculpture of the Twentieth Century” exhibition. This journey took her to the Art Institute of Chicago and MoMA in New York. After a long period in storage Maja returned. This time she has her own park named Maja Park. This symbolizes her enduring legacy. This statue is a powerful reminder. It reminds us of the strength of art and the spirit of those who create it. Even in the face of oppression. So look closely at Maja. Let her story resonate within you. Let it inspire you to find your own strength. Let it remind you of the importance of art. Art as a form of resistance. Art as a symbol of hope.
