A mosaic of blue towers and golden spheres rises before you. This is not an amusement park. This is Maishima Island.

Maishima Island is an artificial island. It sits in Osaka Bay. It is part of Konohana-ku in Osaka Prefecture.

Imagine, if you will, that you are standing on land reclaimed from the sea. Maishima’s story is one of transformation. It changed from a waste disposal site to a sports and recreation hub.

In 1972, the area that would become Maishima was designated for waste treatment. By 1987, this “North Kohoku District” stopped accepting waste.

The island’s development was part of the Technoport Osaka concept. This plan was created in 1983. It aimed to develop cultural and recreational facilities. The goal was to have 10,000 employees and a daytime population of 22,000 by 2010.

The name “Maishima” was chosen in 1991. It was selected through a public naming contest. “Sakishima” and “Yumeshima” were also named at the same time.

The vision for Maishima evolved into a “sports island.” There were plans for an artificial ski resort and a golf course. Maishima hosted events for the 52nd National Athletic Meet in 1997. Maishima Baseball Stadium, Ookini Arena Maishima, and Maishima Stadium were venues.

Maishima was a candidate for the 2008 Summer Olympics. The games were eventually awarded to Beijing.

After the Olympic bid failed, Maishima found new purpose. Cerezo Osaka set up a practice field. The Orix Buffaloes established a training base. The Osaka Evessa basketball team also created a training facility here.

Today, Maishima is divided into zones. The east side is for logistics and environmental facilities. The west side offers sports and recreation.

Note the Maishima Incineration Plant. Its design is by Friedensreich Hundertwasser. The plant reflects “the harmony of technology, ecology, and art.” Its curved lines and colorful windows create a unique landmark. The red and yellow stripes represent the flames burning inside.

The Maishima Incineration Plant is not just about aesthetics. It recycles steel and aluminum. Steam generates electricity. The plant contributes to waste management awareness.

Visitors can tour the Maishima Plant free of charge. Inside, giant claws grab waste. The plant burns waste at high temperatures. It produces steam and electricity. Excess power is sold to power companies.

Maishima Island has evolved. It has transformed from a waste disposal site to a vibrant center for sports, recreation, and environmental awareness. It is a testament to Osaka’s innovative spirit.
