Can a street hold a thousand years of whispers? Here on Mainzer Straße in Erfurt, it certainly feels that way. Mainzer Straße isn’t just a street. It’s a living testament to a fascinating, complex relationship between Erfurt and Mainz. Their partnership as sister cities is relatively recent, dating back to 1988. But their shared history stretches back over a millennium, to the very beginnings of Erfurt’s recorded history. Mainzer Straße itself echoes this connection. The very name, Mainzer Straße, whispers of the influence Mainz once held over this city. It all began around the year 1000. The Archbishop of Mainz, one of the most powerful figures in the Holy Roman Empire, became the secular ruler of Erfurt. This marked the beginning of Erfurt’s long ecclesiastical and political connection to Mainz. This connection is also symbolized in Erfurt’s coat of arms, a silver wheel on a red background. This emblem bears a striking resemblance to the “Mainzer Doppelrad” or “Mainz Double Wheel”. It serves as a constant reminder of the intertwined histories of these two cities. By the 13th century, the citizens of Erfurt began to assert their independence. They gradually purchased rights and privileges from the often cash-strapped Archbishop. Erfurt flourished as a center of trade and culture during the 15th century. The city enjoyed significant autonomy as the “Land Erfurt”. It even dared to display a Roman statue in front of the city hall in 1591. This was a bold statement, symbolizing Erfurt’s aspiration to become an imperial free city. However, the Thirty Years’ War devastated Erfurt’s economy. In 1664, the Archbishop of Mainz, Johann Philipp von Schönborn, reasserted his control over Erfurt. The city became a provincial capital within the Electorate of Mainz. Reminders of this era dot the cityscape even today. The imposing Petersberg Citadel, started in 1665, is a symbol of Mainz’s authority. The Angermuseum and the State Chancellery also originated as Baroque buildings during Mainz’s rule. Mainzer Straße stands as a silent witness to this long and intricate history. Even the seemingly ordinary details of this street hold echoes of the past.
