Think of Peter Salzwedel an apothecary. In 1800 he purchased the land planting ginkgoes red oaks and other rare trees. His garden was even praised by Johann Wolfgang Goethe. The famous poet even dedicated a poem to a leaf from Salzwedel’s ginkgo. The park transformed later into a rose garden under the ownership of Georg Friedrich Metzler. Metzler a member of a prominent banking family added a garden house the Schweizer Haus. This hosted concerts and plays. The city of Frankfurt bought the land in 1961. The old Salzwedel trees remain. New ginkgoes grew from the roots of the originals. Others were planted during the park’s 1971 reconstruction. The park is now named Metzlerpark a tribute to the Metzler family’s contributions to Frankfurt’s culture.
