“Another shooting at Mahoney Playground?” a concerned parent might ask today. But let’s journey back to a time when this Staten Island playground was conceived in hope. Mahoney Playground’s story began in 1933. The New York City Board of Education acquired nearly two acres. A school was planned but never built.

Three years passed. The land transferred to the New York City Department of Parks and Recreation. By 1939, a playground emerged. In 1940, Mahoney Playground received its name. It honored Michael J. Mahoney, a local hero. He was a United States Marine killed in World War I. Mahoney lived in New Brighton before enlisting.

At the dedication, Mahoney’s brother presented a plaque. It commemorated the fallen soldier’s sacrifice. For years, the playground stood as a tribute. A place for children to play and remember.

In 1961, changes came to Mahoney Playground. The New York City Housing Authority acquired land nearby. They planned a housing complex. A comfort station and other facilities appeared on the playground. However, this transfer was temporary. By 1966, the Housing Authority returned the land. It became an addition to Mahoney Playground.

Today, Mahoney Playground sits on Staten Island’s North Shore. It lies between Jersey Street and Beechwood Avenue. You’ll find basketball courts and handball courts here. Playground equipment and spray showers offer fun for all ages. Gardens and animal sculptures beautify the park.

But behind the joyful facade lies a troubled history. Headlines sometimes tell of violence. An incident involving a shooting occurred here in 2021. Yet, Mahoney Playground persists. It remains a vital part of the New Brighton community. Efforts continue to improve and protect this space. Volunteers work to clean and beautify the park. They strive to create a safe and welcoming environment. The Friends of Mahoney Park/Playground work hard. They want to create a thriving community space.
