A crouching woman sculpted in bronze. That is what stands before us today as the Mahnmal Madonna der Seefahrt. This Madonna der Seefahrt is more than just a statue. It is a symbol of sorrow, hope, and remembrance.

The Mahnmal Madonna der Seefahrt stands here at the Fischmarkt. It serves as a memorial to those lost at sea. Imagine families waiting for their loved ones to return. Sadly, some never did. The Madonna der Seefahrt embodies their pain.

In the 1950s, German sailors dreamed of a memorial. They sailed around Cape Horn. These sailors wanted a place to remember those lost at sea. In 1980, they joined Hamburg ship captains. Together, they formed a club. Their goal was to erect this memorial.

The Mahnmal Madonna der Seefahrt became a reality thanks to the support of Hamburg families. Seafarers were important to the city’s prosperity. Donations poured in. Manfred Sihle-Wissel designed the statue. It was inaugurated on May 6, 1985. The Mahnmal Madonna der Seefahrt weighs approximately four tons.

The Mahnmal Madonna der Seefahrt depicts a simple female figure. She is crouching. A large wave appears to reach for her. Yet, she looks seaward. Her eyes search the horizon. She hopes to see returning ships. The Madonna symbolizes the suffering of families. The angry sea has torn sailors from their families.

Each year on Totensonntag, a memorial service occurs. This Northern German holiday commemorates the dead. Relatives of those lost at sea gather here. Representatives of maritime institutions also attend. A devotion is read. Wreaths are laid. Prayers and blessings are spoken for the dead sailors. The Windrose shanty choir provides music.

The Mahnmal Madonna der Seefahrt is located at the St. Pauli Fischmarkt. You can reach it by taking the S-Bahn to Reeperbahn. Or, take the U-Bahn to Landungsbrücken. The bus stops Pepermölenbek and Hafentreppe are also nearby.

The woman’s gaze is directed towards the sea. Her back is bent by the heavy burden she carries. Her face is not veiled. She gazes into the distance. She seems to expect something. Her gaze reaches beyond the horizon. She looks for something that should be there. She refuses to believe all hope is lost.

A small copy of the Mahnmal Madonna der Seefahrt stands at Cape Horn. The Cap Horniers placed it in the small chapel. Another small copy resides in Hamburg’s International Maritime Museum.

For over 20 years, a memorial service has been held at the Mahnmal Madonna der Seefahrt. Since 1999, the Hamburger Hafenverein and the Shantychor “Windrose” have organized a small service. The Verein der Kapitäne und nautischen Schiffsoffiziere zu Hamburg has taken over patronage. The Seemannspfarramt der Nordkirche now organizes the service.

The gatherings have been well-received. Even during the Corona pandemic, smaller services took place. Being outdoors and keeping distance was important. Especially during the pandemic, seafarers were hit hard. It was an important sign.

The inscription on the Mahnmal Madonna der Seefahrt’s base reads: “Der unvergesslichen See, den Schiffen, die nicht mehr sind und den schlichten Männern, deren Tage nicht wiederkehren.” This quote is from Joseph Conrad. We remember the unforgettable sea. We remember the ships that are gone. We remember the simple men whose days will not return. The Mahnmal Madonna der Seefahrt ensures their memory lives on.
