The Mähnenrobbe, meaning “South American sea lion,” is perched on a pedestal in a small pond. The pond sits between Brockhausweg and Tauchnitzweg. Access to the green area around the pond is through a gap between buildings at Brockhausweg 60 and 66. The Mähnenrobbe sculpture was commissioned as part of the “Art in Construction” program. The housing association, now known as SAGA, purchased the artwork. They were also the developers of the residential area. Interestingly, SAGA still owns the Mähnenrobbe sculpture. The sculpture depicts a South American sea lion in a relaxed pose. It’s a beautiful representation of an animal not typically found in Germany.
