Defaced with white paint and racist taunts. That was one of the fates of the Mahatma Gandhi Statue. Today we stand before this bronze figure of Mahatma Gandhi in Gandhi Square. It stands as a testament to his complex legacy in South Africa. This statue, sculpted by Tinka Christopher, was unveiled in 2003. It depicts a young Mahatma Gandhi as a lawyer. He is wearing his legal gown.

Gandhi Square was once known as Van der Bijl Square. It was officially renamed in 1999 to honor Gandhi’s time in Johannesburg. The statue marks where Gandhi practiced law in the early 1900s. The Johannesburg City Council commissioned this 2.5-meter bronze figure. It stands near the old Magistrates Courts. These courts were central to Gandhi’s professional and political life.

Mahatma Gandhi arrived in South Africa in 1893 at the age of 24. He came to assist a wealthy businessman with a lawsuit. He stayed for 21 years, fighting racial discrimination against Indians. During this time, he developed his philosophy of Satyagraha or passive resistance. Johannesburg became the center of Gandhi’s struggle. He lived here from 1903 to 1913. These years were formative in shaping his beliefs.

It’s important to acknowledge the controversies surrounding Mahatma Gandhi’s views on black Africans during his time in South Africa. Some historians and activists have pointed out instances of racial prejudice in his early writings and actions. For example, he once campaigned to have a separate entrance for Indians at the Durban post office. This would prevent them from sharing an entrance with black Africans.

However, it is also argued that Mahatma Gandhi’s views evolved over time. He began to envision an inclusive, multiracial society. In a 1908 speech in Johannesburg, he spoke of different races coming together. He dreamed of a new civilization.

In recent years, there have been calls to remove the Mahatma Gandhi Statue. Some want to rename Gandhi Square after anti-apartheid activist Sophie de Bruyn. The Economic Freedom Fighters political party moved to remove the statue. They cited racist statements made by the young Gandhi.

Despite these controversies, the Johannesburg City Council voted against removing the statue. They recognized Mahatma Gandhi’s contribution to the fight for equality. They acknowledged his role in the struggle against apartheid. Nelson Mandela urged that Gandhi be forgiven for his prejudices. He said Gandhi should be judged in the context of his time.

Today, the Mahatma Gandhi Statue is a reminder of a complex past. It represents both the struggle for justice and the imperfections of a man who became an icon. It invites us to reflect on the complexities of history. It urges us to consider how individuals can evolve in their understanding of justice and equality.
