Here stands the Mahalia Jackson Theater. This theater is more than just a building. It is a testament to New Orleans’ resilience. It also honors a gospel legend.

The Mahalia Jackson Theater first opened its doors in January 1973. It was originally named the New Orleans Theater for the Performing Arts. The inaugural performance was Giuseppe Verdi’s Messa da Requiem. It featured New Orleans native Norman Treigle. The New Orleans Philharmonic-Symphony Orchestra performed too. Werner Torkanowsky conducted.

In 1995, the theater received a new name. It became the Mahalia Jackson Theater. This was to honor Mahalia Jackson. She was the Queen of Gospel. She was born in New Orleans in 1911. Jackson began singing at Mt Moriah Baptist Church. She later became an international icon. She sang for civil rights. She encouraged Dr. King’s “I Have a Dream” speech.

The Mahalia Jackson Theater suffered significant damage in 2005. Hurricane Katrina brought over 14 feet of water inside. This damaged essential systems. The theater closed.

After four years and 27 million dollars in repairs, the theater reopened in January 2009. The reopening featured local legends. Kermit Ruffins, Irma Thomas, and Allen Toussaint performed. The Mahalia Jackson Theater was the first major theater to reopen after Katrina. City officials hoped it would draw tourists back to New Orleans.

The theater seats 2,100 patrons. It serves as the home for the New Orleans Ballet Association. It is also home to the New Orleans Opera Association. Broadway Across America also holds touring productions here. Before Katrina, the Louisiana Philharmonic Orchestra called this home. They moved to the Orpheum Theater later.

Diana Ross once performed a three-night sold-out engagement at the Mahalia Jackson Theater. That engagement was deemed one of the most successful pop concerts at the venue. In 2013, the theater hosted the 2012 NFL Honors.

The Mahalia Jackson Theater stands as a symbol of artistic excellence. It also represents the spirit of New Orleans. It is a place where music, dance, and theater come alive. It honors a remarkable woman. It also inspires future generations.
