Before you stand the Mahalakshmi Mandir, a temple of great historical and cultural significance in Mumbai, India. It is one of the most revered temples in the city, dedicated to the Hindu goddess of wealth and prosperity, Mahalakshmi. Construction began in 1831 by Dhakji Dadaji, a Hindu merchant. It is believed that the temple’s location is related to a fascinating story. Imagine, back in the 18th century, when the Hornby Vellard, a project to build a sea wall to protect Mumbai from flooding, faced numerous setbacks. Portions of the sea wall kept collapsing. Desperate for a solution, the chief engineer, Shree Ramji Shivji, dreamt of the Goddess Mahalakshmi. She told him to find three statues of Mahalakshmi, Mahakali, and Mahasaraswati lying at the bottom of the sea near Worli, and to build a temple for them. Following this dream, he found the statues and constructed this magnificent temple. The sea wall was then completed without further incidents. Today, the temple houses the three original statues, bringing a sense of awe and devotion to those who witness them. Look closely, and you’ll see that the deities are covered with beautiful golden masks. To catch a glimpse of the original statues, you can visit during the morning abhishekam at 6am or in the evening around 9:30 pm, when they are adorned with sindhoor, a red powder auspicious in Maharashtrian culture. The temple stands on the edge of the Arabian Sea. Descend about 50 steps from the back of the temple, and you’ll find yourself at the sea’s edge. This is a beautiful spot to experience the serenity of the ocean. Imagine, standing between the temple and the sea, you get a sense of power and tranquility. You’ll also discover small temples dedicated to Ganesha and Hanuman near the sea-side area. As you stroll around the temple and listen to the chants of the devotees, remember that the Mahalakshmi Mandir is a true testament to faith and perseverance that continues to bring hope and renewal to countless people.
