Have you ever heard of a temple named after a king’s escape from cholera? Right here in the Maha Phruettharam Subdistrict, we find Wat Maha Phruettharam Worawihan. It’s a temple steeped in history, with its name echoing a legendary tale. Maha Phruettharam Subdistrict takes its name from this very temple. The story goes that King U-thong, fleeing a cholera outbreak, parked his wagon in this area. It was known as a resting spot for travelers. This event eventually led to the area, and later the temple, being named Maha Phruettharam. The temple itself has seen many transformations. Originally called Wat Tha Kwian, it was rebuilt during the reign of King Rama IV. He and his son, the future King Rama V, jointly constructed the new temple. King Rama IV renamed it Wat Takien. King Rama V later renovated it, elevating it to a royal temple and giving it the name we know today: Wat Maha Phruettharam Worawihan. Inside the temple walls, you’ll find stunning murals covering the ordination hall. These murals depict the thirteen ascetic practices of Buddhism. Another treasure within the temple is a 19-meter-long reclining Buddha, cast in gold. This makes it the second largest reclining Buddha in Bangkok, second only to the one at Wat Pho. The Maha Phruettharam Subdistrict isn’t just about the temple. It’s the northernmost area of Bang Rak District. It’s bordered by several other subdistricts and districts. These include Pom Prap, Rong Mueang, Wang Mai, Si Phraya, Bang Rak, and Talat Noi. This area is a vibrant mix of old and new, with the historical significance of the temple blending seamlessly with the modern city. The Maha Phruettharam Subdistrict offers a glimpse into Bangkok’s rich past, reminding us of the stories and events that have shaped this fascinating city.
