Magnolia Plantation and Gardens, nestled along the Ashley River, has a history as rich and layered as its camellias. The story begins in 1676 with Thomas and Ann Drayton. Arriving from Barbados, they established Magnolia as a rice plantation, carving out a life in the Carolina Lowcountry. A small formal English garden, Flowerdale, was created in 1685. Fast forward to the 1840s. Reverend John Grimké Drayton, needing outdoor work for his health, transformed the landscape. He created a romantic garden for his wife, Juliana. This marked the beginning of Magnolia’s transformation. Reverend Drayton introduced America’s first azaleas and incorporated camellias into the native woodlands. These gardens flourished under his care, a testament to his vision. After the Civil War, in 1870, Magnolia Plantation opened its gates to the public. It became one of America’s oldest public gardens, showcasing its remarkable beauty. The legacy of rice gave way to a legacy of blooms. Today, Magnolia Plantation and Gardens spans over 600 acres. Visitors can explore the historic Drayton family tomb, wander through the azalea gardens bursting with heirloom varieties, and discover the serene Japanese Garden.
