How long do you think a bridge can last? The Maestri Bridge a testament to enduring strength stands before us. This isn’t just any bridge. It’s a 4.78-mile concrete marvel. It was once the longest concrete bridge globally. That’s quite a feat.

Opened on February 18 1928 the Maestri Bridge initially bore a different name. It was known as the Pontchartrain Bridge. Later it became the Watson-Williams Pontchartrain Bridge and even the Five Mile Bridge. Can you imagine the changes this bridge has witnessed? It has seen everything.

This iconic structure wasn’t always free to cross. Initially drivers paid $1.25 plus ten cents per extra passenger. Governor Huey Long however opposed toll bridges. He built free alternatives. This led to the Maestri Bridge’s sale to the state in 1938 for $940000. Its name was then changed to honor New Orleans Mayor Robert Maestri.

US Route 11 was rerouted onto the Maestri Bridge around 1941. It became a crucial link. Even Hurricane Katrina in 2005 couldn’t fully defeat it. While the nearby I-10 Twin Span Bridge was devastated the Maestri Bridge stood largely unharmed. It provided the only East-West route to New Orleans. The resilience of this bridge is extraordinary.

The Maestri Bridge has undergone various repairs. In 2012 a $5.7 million contract focused on its railings. Then in 2019 a massive $28.6 million overhaul took place. This shows the dedication to preserving a piece of history. It is a vital artery connecting communities. The Maestri Bridge more than just concrete and steel. It’s a symbol of New Orleans history. A legacy that continues to span Lake Pontchartrain.
